Becoming a Big Girl

I have NO CLUE what the above picture has to do with any of this post, except that to me it looks kinda super hero-ish, and I'm feeling kinda super hero-ish.  I don't know why it took me 32 years to decide what I want to be when I "grow up" but it did.  Now here I am, submitting a college application and a FAFSA, which was a pain in the royal patootis.  I have never liked school.  My two attempts at college were HORRIBLE.  If I have any advice for you young ones getting out of highschool, don't go to college until you know what you want to be.  At least, that's my advice if you are someone like me who needs to have a clear goal and direction.

My ultimate goal is to become a nurse.  Specifically an RN and I would love to work in pediatrics or labor and delivery.  I am so crazy excited to begin this journey, but I am also scared and worried at the same time.  Knowing how I have done in school in the past, I am so nervous about succeeding, but I know that I can't worry about that, I just have to DO IT!

I have my application submitted, I have my FAFSA submitted... now I wait.  Unless something goes dreadfully wrong and I get denied, I should be starting school in January 2012... new baby and all.  Which means I will more than likely have to change some of my plans as far as the baby is concerned to make it easier on me to do school work... like cloth diapering.  I really wanted to do that, but I don't think I will be able to keep up with the extra loads of laundry and do school.  We will have to see and take a it one day at a time.

There is the big news on the Schmamey front.  I will hopefully be going back to school.  I will hopefully do good and I will hopefully be an RN in 4 years resulting in me either working Labor and Delivery or Pediatrics.  GAH!  I'm really feeling a lot of anxiety and excitement, but there you have it.  I also hope that I won't be recanting any of this later... I just wanted to tell you all what is going on with me right now.

  1. That's so awesome Amy! I'm proud of you for making that step! I agree, college and picking that lifetime profession is hard to do at such a young age. I'm 27 and still deciding. Maybe when I'm 32 I'll know for sure. Good luck with juggling it all, I'm sure you'll do fantastic!

  7. Way to go! I agree with encouraging students to wait until after they have some direction before going to college. I finished my B.S. at 27 & still had to go back & get my M.Ed. & certification after I decided I wanted to teach. I could have already been teaching for a few years if I had everything together at 18. Nursing is a great profession to go into. You'll do a great job! :-)

  8. Girlie you will do AMAZING. There is no way to get denied with the FAFSA, their basically dying to give you free money!! It me 30 years to finally figure out what I wanted to do and that was after completing a undergrad and graduate degree!

  9. I'm so excited for you! My sister is going through nursing school, and she loves it. Maternity would be very cool to work in.
I totally agree with ya about waiting to do school until you know what you want.

  14. how cool! congrats on making such a big decision! i feel the same way about college. i think it's overrated. i am not even doing anything with my BA but i'm stuck with the student loan. i would tell my kid one day to not worry about a 4 year college until they know what they wanna do for sure. a 2 year or vocational school are the way to go :)

  16. that is so awesome! good luck!!! i think its great that you're going after what you want. i know exactly what you mean by waiting until you know what you want to be.
i've been to hair school and also went to a semester of business school. i now know more than ever what i want to be and its not a comsmetologist (although i must admitt, the skill is MAGNIF to have) and its not a business major, its a writer. and that's nothing i'll be going for school for because, well, i don't have to!
